Hulless barley variety Kornelija was developed at Research Center  in Stende , part of  Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics . The development process of creating the variety has been going on for almost 10 years, until in 2014 Kornelija was included in the Catalog of Latvian Plant Varieties and the State Register of Protected Plant Varieties of Latvia, and the State Registry of Protected Plant Varieties of Estonia. According to the Community Plant Variety Office’s decision No 55819 of the 15th June 2020, Community plant variety right has granted to Kornelija. The variety is protected on EU  level till 31.12.2045.

In the food production chain of whole grain products and functional cereals, Kornelija  variety has several advantages over the cereals available on the market. Hulless barley variety Kornelija will greatly contribute to the improvement of economic competitiveness of participants of two sectors important for the Latvian economy: agriculture and food industry. Kornelija grains are very well-suited for increasing the nutritional value of traditional whole grain products (flour, bread, pastry), as well as for the production of specific functional  and niche foods.

FOR FARMERS – SEED AND GRAIN GROWERS

  • Very early ripening: takes place simultaneously with winter wheat varieties, excellent pre-culture for wintering species, ensures diversity of species in crop rotation.

  • Genetically determined potential to produce large and biochemically high-value grains, even at relatively lower doses of mineral nitrogen and in conditions of organic farming

  • Provides competitive earning opportunities, similar or equal to summer wheat varieties. For more information read more

  • You can find out about growing Kornelija barley for seed here, while grain growing technology for food is described here. A separate technology is also provided for the organic farming method – read here

FOR GRAIN PROCESSORS AND FOOD PRODUCERS

  • Absolutely hulless grain quality: 97-100% of the grain husk detaches during threshing. That eliminates the need for mechanical peeling to provide cheaper and up to 10 times faster processing

  • Economically viable source of protein and beta-glucans, even compared to oats and other barley grains

  • No loss of grain nutrients: yields are 10-12% higher per tonne of grain compared to non-hulless barley varieties

  • Large grains : average bulk density 720 g/l; weight of 1000 grains on average 48 g – read more
